Dan Dare Facsimile (series)

Series review:
[Mekon] The famous British Dan Dare comic strip ran in the Eagle from 1950 to 1967. Hawk have published a wonderful facsimile edition, in 12 volumes, of all but a few of these classic adventures. (The missing adventures, listed in volume 12, from late in the run, have been left out because they were in black and white, or in a unsuitable format, as the Eagle messed about with the strip in its later life.)

Square-jawed, clean-cut, strangely-eyebrowed Colonel Dan Dare, accompanied by his faithful Wigan batman Digby (for comic relief), is an heroic space pilot in the United Nations Space Fleet. He zips about the Solar System, and occasionally beyond, having adventures with a variety of humanoid aliens (distinguuished mainly by their different colour skins -- green, blue, gold), and battling the evil Mekon and other dangers with a combination of courage, integrity, and two strong fists. A classic (although it does tail off towards the end, as the Eagle messed about with the strip...).

Series rating: 2
[ unmissable | great stuff | worth reading | mind candy | waste of time | unfinishable ]
