Peter J. Bentley. Digital Biology: the creation of life inside computers. Headline. 2001

Rating: 3.5
[ unmissable | great stuff | worth reading | passes the time | waste of time | unfinishable ]

reviewed 6 May 2002

Peter Bentley argues that digital life created inside computers is not merely a simulation, but is just as real as "real" life. He surveys many areas of biology -- brains, insects, plants, immune systems, growth -- and shows how these are inspiring corresponding digital versions inside computers, and some of the not-so-obvious uses they are being put to. Finally he pulls together theses various areas, and shows what they all have in common -- they are all complex systems, made of many components interacting with feedback, perturbed by the environment -- a model which could promise to unify various areas of biology. He covers some very deep material in a light chatty style, with lots of illustrative examples -- not all of them the usual ones.

A good overview of a fascinating and exciting new area of computation.

[L-systems] can represent the form of music just as easily as plants. Instead of trunks, stems and leaves, the symbols can be used to specify musical notes for different musical instruments.

According to [the 'autopoetic system'] view, the immune system is no longer a collection of cells ad organs that respond to invading pathogens to protect the body. Instead, it is a 'closed system' of complex interacting elements that tries to maintain its delicate internal balance. When a pathogen invades, the balance is upset and ... the immune system wobbles around until it regains its stability once again.

antibodies can be thought of as solutions to problems. ... So if you change the problem from 'detecting hackers' to something else, the immune system can solve the new problem. ... immune systems can solve purely mathematical problems
