PhD Topics

I am currently looking to recruit, smart, highly motivated, ambitious students wanting to do a PhD in real-time systems.

I am happy to supervise students in any of my main areas of interest. These include:
• Real-Time Scheduling and schedulability Analysis for single processor and multiprocessor systems.
• Real-time networks, in particular Controller Area Network (CAN) and CAN-FD.
• Integration of schedulability analysis and worst-case execution time analysis, including Cache Related Pre-emption and Migration Delays.
• Mixed Criticality Systems.
• Probabilistic Hard Real-Time Systems, including static and measurement-based probabilistic timing analysis.

My aim is to help you select a topic for your PhD research that will enable you to engage in meaningful research in the first year, progressing to writing award quality papers that form chapters of your thesis in your second and third years.

Who you would be working with and where

You would be joining the Real-Time Systems Research Group at the University of York, one of the world's leading research groups in the real-time systems field. The group is renowned not only for its seminal publications on a wide range of real-time topics, but also its significant industrial impact through a number of successful start-up and spin-out companies. The Department of Computer Science at the University of York was rated 5th out of 89 Computer Science departments in the recent assessment of research quality (REF 2014) on research impact, with three out of the four Impact Case Studies coming from the Real-Time Systems Research Group. The Department was rated 7th equal (with Oxford) on overall research excellence. The Department of Computer Science is located in the new Heslington East campus of the University of York, in a purpose-built building. It is the newest Computer Science facility in the United Kingdom. York is one of the most historic, picturesque and safe cities in the country.
