My specialist teaching area relates to Continued Professional Development (CPD) courses. Safety critical systems are an expanding subset of the systems being engineered. Their defining characteristic is that they can cause harm to the people that use them or bystanders. System Safety Engineering can be defined through its objectives:
Obviously, this engineering function is intended to be, and is, most effective when conducted concurrently with the system design process. The System Safety Engineer is dedicated to eliminating unnecessary risk of damage and injury while minimising residual accident risk. I teach on an advanced MSc in Safety Critical Systems (SCSE) and Postgraduate Certificate in System Safety Engineering (SSE) courses in the Department. For more details of the CPD work we have undertaken over the last 8 years see my round up on Lifelong Learning in the HISE group and the SCSE / SEE course pages. |
