CALL FOR PAPERS FOR THE SMART ADAPTIVE AGENT (SA3) WORKSHOP

Smart Adaptive Agent Applications
            (SA3)
   Joint ALAD and EUNITE Workshop
   at the EUNITE 2003 conference
          10-12 July
          Oulu Finland

Introduction

When designing agent systems, it is impossible to foresee all potential
situations an agent may encounter and specify the agents' behavior
optimally in advance. Agents therefore have to learn from and adapt to
their environment. This task is even more complex when the agent is
situated in an environment that contains other agents with potentially
different capabilities and goals. Multi-agent learning, i.e., the
ability of agents to learn how to co-operate and compete, becomes
crucial in such domains.
       Adaptive Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (AAMAS) is an emerging
multi-disciplinary area encompassing agents, machine learning, software
engineering, biology, as well as cognitive and social sciences. One of
the major challenges faced in this field is the transfer of technologies
that have been successful in simple domains to real-world applications.
       The SA3 workshop will focus on such applications of smart
adaptive agents and multi-agent systems. Three keynote speakers from
industry will be invited to present examples of the use of adaptive
agent technology in industrial applications.
       The goal of this workshop is to increase awareness and interest
in adaptive agent research, encourage collaboration between members of
EUNITE and ALAD, and give a representative overview of current
applications in the area of adaptive agents.
The EUNITE 2003 Conference
EUNITE 2003 is the third conference organized by the European Network of
Excellence EUNITE. The conference will feature state-of-the-art
presentations as well as new developments in fuzzy logic, neural
networks, evolutionary computation and machine learning. The focus will
be on adaptive systems, with a special interest in solving industrial
problems.

Topics of Interest
The workshop will focus on (but will not be restricted to) applications
of smart adaptive agents for:

* Embodied Conversational Agents,
* System Control
* Information Retrieval and Presentation
* Transport Systems
* Ambient Intelligence
* Health Care
* E-Commerce
* Telecommunications
* Interactive Entertainment
* Military Organisation

The workshop on Smart Adaptive Agent Applications is jointly organized
by the European Network of Excellence EUNITE and the ALAD SIG (Agents
that Learn, Adapt and Discover) of the European Network of Excellence
AgentLink II.
