The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook.
Chronicle Books. 1999

rating : 4.5 : passes the time

The indispensable, indestructible guide for surviving life’s sudden turns for the worse. Survival experts provide illustrated, step-by-step instructions on what you need to know FAST:

• How to Fend off a Shark
• How to Take a Punch
• How to Deliver a Baby in a Taxicab
• How to Survive a Poisonous Snake Attack How to Jump from a Moving Car
• How to Identify a Bomb
• How to Escape from Killer Bees
• How to Survive If Your Parachute Fails to Open

… and dozens of other dire situations.

I’m not entirely sure of the point of this book. It contains lots of (good, I assume) advice about what to do in certain unfortunate situations. But, of course, to act on this advice one would have to train, in order to be able to perform the required actions, or even just to remember what those actions are. If any of these things does happen to me, the best I’ll manage is to think: “oh yes, there’s something I should do in these circumstances; now, what was it?”

The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Travel.

Always be ready for the worst—you’re at risk from the moment you step outside your front door! Here are illustrated, step-by-step instructions on what you need to know NOW:

• How to Cross a Piranha-Infested River
• How to Survive a Sandstorm
• How to Stop a Runaway Train
• How to Survive an Airplane Crash
• How to Build a Shelter in the Snow
• How to Escape from the Trunk of a Car
• How to Treat a Scorpion Sting
• How to Survive a Volcanic Eruption
• How to Pass a Bribe

…plus an appendix of essential travel strategies, phrases, and gestures to use—and avoid.

I skimmed through this before going on an overseas trip. Like its earlier companion volume, I’m not sure of the point of this. I again assume the advice is good (although I do wonder how the authors tested their advice on “How to foil a UFO abduction”…), but again, I’m sure if any of the related situations happens to me, I’ll either have forgotten the advice, or not be able to implement it sufficiently smoothly to work.
