Maria Leach. The Ultimate Insult. Michael O'Mara Books. 1996

Rating: 4.5

A collection of insults, some famous, some not so well known, most rather amusing. There is a little padding: some of the entries are more cynical aphorisms that insults against specific people. Yet there are omissions: the famous Margot Asquith/Jean Harlow exchange ("the 't' is silent, as in Harlow") is inexplicably absent. The entires are insufficiently referenced to be able to track down the original with ease. For example, several of the insults are noted as coming from Melody Maker, but no publication date is given. Many are simply "Anon". There is an index, covering both insulter and insultee.
